SEAMOUNT

A MOUNTAIN UNDER THE SEA

A seamount is a mountain that rises from the ocean floor but does not emerge from the sea’s surface. They are formed by extinct volcanoes which climb abruptly, and are usually found on the seabed at a depth of 1000 to 4000 m. Seamounts are defined by oceanographers as independent features which rise at least 1000 m above the surrounding ocean relief.
